Event Description:

Ever want to know the name of a flower and try to describe it to someone only to receive a blank stare? Ever draw a flower and think, “that doesn’t look anything like it”? This class will put you on the right path.

In this three-hour class students will learn the botanical terms used to describe a plant; learn how to look closely at a flower and describe it in their own terminology; and translate that knowledge into a simple drawing of a flower.

Our presenter, Master Gardener Carol Ashton-Hergenhan, received her bachelor’s degree from the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) and went on to study at the Temple University Tyler School of Art, earning a master’s degree in media. She privately studied Chinese watercolor techniques with Phoebe Shih (Shih Hwei-Yueh) for several years and has also studied botanical watercolors at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Plants have always been central to her art.

We’ll provide paper, a pencil and a flower sample to attendees. You can arrange to pick up the materials at the Arboretum prior to the class, or you can use your own.

This program is part of the Ambler Arboretum Speaker Series and is offered in a pay-what-you-can format to work toward creating equitable access to all of our programs. Thank you for paying what you can so we can continue this series. If you’d like to sponsor the Ambler Arboretum Speaker Series, contact Arboretum Director Kathy Salisbury.

After you register, we’ll send you a confirmation email with a Zoom link to the event.
