Jeffrey S. Coons, PhD ‘96

Jeffrey S. Coons, PhD, a chartered financial analyst, has been working for over 30 years in the
investment industry, including most recently serving as the President of Manning & Napier, a NYSE
investment firm with over $40 billion in assets under management. Prior to this position, he was a
member of the Executive Group at Manning & Napier, which functioned as the firm’s chief executive
during Manning & Napier’s strong growth period from 2003 to 2010. In addition, Dr. Coons is a member
of the Senior Research Group, which establishes and monitors the investment disciplines of the firm.
Dr. Coons began his career at Manning & Napier in 1985 and served the firm as an equity analyst and
coordinator of the equity investment process. In 1990, he began his doctoral studies in Economics at
Temple University. While completing his studies, Dr. Coons was a fixed income portfolio manager for
Turner Investment Partners in Philadelphia. In 1993, Dr. Coons returned to Manning & Napier to form
the Risk Management Group, providing advanced quantitative tools for the assessment and
management of investment risk for client portfolios. His role changed in 2002 when he became Co‐
Director of Research with responsibility for the Research Department of the firm.
Dr. Coons received his PhD in economics from Temple University in 1996. He graduated with distinction
from the University of Rochester with a BA in economics. Additionally, Dr. Coons holds the designation
of Chartered Financial Analyst, and is one of the employee‐owners of Manning & Napier.
